Is My Tween Being Bullied?

Written by: Amanda Elias, M.A., Child Development Specialist

Signs that my child may being bullied:

  • Withdrawing from favorite activities

  • Decreased interest in school and school related activities

  • Decreased time spent with usual social group

  • Changes in appetite (may increase or decrease)

  • Starting to consistently miss the bus or delay morning routine

  • Show signs of anger or heightened emotions

  • Physical signs such as bruises or scrapes

What can I do?

  • Talk to your child and encourage them to stay away from the bully

  • Assure your child that it is not their fault

  • Role play words to use when they are faced with uncomfortable situations

  • Inform them of the adults he or she can go to for help and practice phrases to use without sounding like tattling

  • Assure them it is important for their safety and the safety of others to STEP UP AND SPEAK OUT!

Where can I turn for help?

  • If you want to facilitate your tween’s ability to develop effective communication, coping, and problem solving skills, reserve a seat for them in the supportive youth group starting on March 17th for children 10-12. Space is limited so contact Amanda Elias, MA immediately if you are interested.
