Kim Wallant
Creative Therapy Specialist

Kim Wallant, our specialist in Creative Art and Play Therapy, helps parents understand their children or teens through the media of art, play, and sand tray. From years of experience, Kim has seen that many, if not most, children and teens have trouble finding words to describe their feelings or worries or using reasoning to solve their problems. Art, play, and sand tray therapies tap into the intuitive wisdom that is within every person, young or old––the part of the brain that develops before we learn to speak and that doesn't rely on language or logic.

Kim became passionate about child-centered play therapy and sand tray therapy when she worked with children at the Association for Community Counseling in Delray Beach, as a graduate student in Counseling Psychology at FIU. Then, while completing a Masters in Expressive Arts Therapy/Counseling Psychology at Prescott College, Kim facilitated small play therapy groups of at–risk school children, conducted individual art therapy sessions, and also helped to teach play therapy principles to teachers and parents for All 'Bout Children in West Palm Beach. Then, at the Child Life Institute at St. Mary's Medical Center, West Palm Beach, Kim facilitated art therapy sessions––individually at bedside and with groups in the hospital playrooms––with children and teens facing chronic, life-threatening illnesses. Additionally, Kim worked with Dr. Myra Levick, one of the founders of art therapy as a profession, at The Wellness Resource Center and at the Levis Alzheimer & Adult Day Care Center in Boca Raton.

After serving disadvantaged young people, ages 3 to 19, through community agencies in West Palm Beach, Kim now provides creative art and play therapy for children and teens whose families seek support at Families By Design. Your child or teen will gain confidence and self-awareness in an environment of freedom, nonjudgment, and spontaneity. He or she will become more adept at communicating with you and with others. Kim will support you in learning to understand your child or teen's unique communications, using creative expression as a tool to explore thoughts and feelings, and will also show you ways of setting limits and communicating so your child or teen will listen. At Families By Design, you can renew and improve your relationship with your child.
