Play therapy is generally employed with children ages 3 to 11. This type of therapy provides a way for children to express their experiences and feelings through a natural, self-guided, self-healing process. As children’s experiences and feelings are often communicated through play, it becomes an important vehicle for them to know and accept themselves and others.
Play Therapy is often used as tool of diagnosis. A play therapist observes a client playing with toys (play-houses, pets, dolls, etc) to determine the cause of behavior. The objects and patterns of play, as well as the willingness to interact with the therapist, can be used to understand the underlying rationale for behavior both inside and outside the session.
When communication gaps exist between a parent and young child, emotional needs are left unmet. Filial Therapy teaches the parent a new way of interacting with their child, thus improving the parent-child relationship. Children communicate through play. It is their innate language. By teaching parents the language of play, and how to use play therapeutically, the communication gap between parent and child can be closed.
Additionally, filial therapy provides focused attention to the child from the person who holds emotional significance to the child, and provides opportunities for miscommunications to be clarified to the child by the parent.
Activity therapy is for preteens and adolescents. The client is engaged in nonverbal modes of relationship--games, free play, movement, drama, music, art or other activities, as the chief therapeutic media in which conflicts are resolved and intellectual and emotional energies freed.
