How to help my rommate
Millkell January 12, 2009 1:36 PM

I have a new roomate that has a history of trauma. The other night she became catatonic and was not responsive to any stimuli around her. How do I help her in a time like this as a friend, not a therapist. Thank you for any suggestions.

Characteristics of catatonia vary widely. First it is important that your room mate be on the proper medication to prevent these episodes. However, once in an episode you may need to respond based on her behavior. Meaning if she is engaging in any behaviors that are not safe for her you need to call 911 and have her hospitalized. If she is not engaged in any dangerous behaviors then there is not a lot for you to do other then wait for the episode to be over. Again, her prevention regarding these episodes is most critical.
